We would always advocate that an Independent SEMA Racking Safety Inspection is carried out on your sites racking systems.
For many years we have been working with customers who have had visits from the Local Environmental Health Officers (EHO’s) and The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) which highlights the need to inspect and repair your racking on a regular basis.
For this we can arrange a local Qualified Registered SARI (Storage Equipment Manufacturer’s Association SEMA Approved Racking Inspector) to carry out an independent audit report for you to meet Compliance.
It is easy to assume the racking installed in your warehouse is safe, we tend to take it for granted, but is it safe, has it been damaged, have we seen it, there is a fine balance between safe, and something going wrong.
This is where a SEMA approved racking inspection will give you peace of mind, once the structure is up warehouse owners need to inspect it on a regular basis, to ensure it remains safe.
There will be knocks and bumps along with everyday use, but when does that scuff or bump become structural damage beyond the limits that needs repair.
Even small minor issues can become serious if not found and addressed, The Health and Safety Executive guidance, HSG76 Racking Safety Awareness recommends that members of your staff should be trained to understand and check your racks each week for potential risks and damage, we can also arrange for your staff to be trained on your site.
At least once a year your racking should be checked by a professionally trained and qualified racking inspector, they will look at all aspects of safety for the structure and the loading notices detailing the maximum weights that it, is capable of taking.
They will take the details of all relevant equipment dimensions are held on file so that should the client require load notices or to check on the safety of any alteration we will be able to offer advice. Where a long period of time has elapsed since the last inspection, a new inspection or survey may be required to re-check the equipment dimensions.
SEMA Guidelines
A damage report provides information on hazards that have been identified during the inspection. The hazards are assessed on the likelihood and severity of a component failure, other risks not related to racking damage will be assessed accordingly. Assessment of risk will be based on the equipment’s condition, use and current codes and legislation at the time of the inspection.
The categories of risk are:
Green
Periodic monitoring required.
Amber
Damage requiring action for repairs, to be off-loaded and repair within 4 weeks.
Red Risk
Very serious damage requiring immediate off-load, possible collapse, cordon off fit signs do not use, stop using it until it is repaired.
These will be reported on a damage sheet, with reference to stock location and a site drawing layout giving details and an explanation of the fault, or damage found and how to address the situation in written detail.
From this report we will be able to provide the materials and labor costs to carry out the repairs, also if the systems you have are obsolete, or beyond economical repair, we can provide quotations for replacement racking to suit your needs.
